lessons from running your own business

My husband and I started our law firm in July 2013. It has been 7 years of learning and growing for us. I am grateful everyday that we now have an amazing team who shares and contributes to our vision and work with us to achieve our goals. It is truly a team effort now!

I am now glad to say that we have not just passed our business’ 5 years hurdle, but also elevated from our 7 year’s itch. We are now reaching to complete our this year’s financial target with ease. With ease doesn’t mean without hard work. there is still a lot of work involved but mentally, there is no struggle anymore; instead, there is clarity and focus across the whole team.

Here are the 8 lessons I have learned which contribute to our current success:

  1. Implementing EOS system has made us work harder on refining our visiions and finding the right KPIs for the firm as a whole. The best bit from EOS system I would say is the quarterly rock setting and holding the team accountable. Everyone is very clear with their quarterly target and focus on them throughout the quarter.
  2. Learn and try new things much quicker so that we either get the results quicker or we fail quicker. I definitely have no patience on long draging decision making processes. I am famous for being impient at work. Lawyers are very logical but sometime you just need to follow your gut and do it!
  3. What we are reaping now are the relationships we have been nurturing for 5 years or more. So it is never a quick win for us. It is all about CONSISTENT follow-ups. We build a whole system on lead generations and how to keep in touch with them afterwards. We also have a systerm on how to keep in touch with our exsiting contacts and clients so that we can retain more work from them consitently. It is an eco system we are building here. The word I am using on almost every sigle team meeting is consistent. If we do it consistently, we will get the job when the clients needs arise.
  4. Trust the team and allow them to make mistakes as we all do! This is so important as we can’t achieve our goals by ourselves! This is a huge thing for me. Once I let it go, our team members flourishing with their own strength. I am so pleased that we have such a strong team and we all know our own seats and delegate the things which we are not good at!
  5. Have a LOT of meaningful conversations with prospects, referrers and client. Contanstly asking yourself ‘how can I do better with the calls next time?’ and ‘how can I improve my business development call skills?” we created a checklist for business development calls so that we make sure we don’t miss out anything when we conduct the calls. I am still a student of this!
  6. Our mindset has shifted massively in the past 6 months. We deeply believe that we can bring a huge value to our clients, referrers and the community we work in. So when we selll to them, it is not about selling but it is about how can we add value to them and serve them better.
  7. We streamline our offerings and make it ultra focus from the marketing prospective.
  8. I don’t give up and stupidly optimistic! I am the team’s cheerleader. One of my life purposes is to realise our team’s true potentials. When things get really bad, I walk away, read my favourite books, do some exercises and watch a good movie. I am ready to continue! Things always work out! It can not be!
